PEP stands for post-exposure prophylaxis, and is an antiretroviral medicine designed for people potentially exposed to HIV to prevent becoming infected.

PEP medication must be started within 72 hours of recent possible exposure to HIV, and should only be used in emergency situations.

Consult with one of our HIV specialist doctors or an emergency room doctor right away if you think you’ve been recently exposed to HIV during sex or through sharing needles.

Some examples of high-risk exposure to HIV include:

• Having anal sex without condoms with someone who has HIV or you think may have HIV
• Having sex when a condom has broken or fallen off
• Sharing needles to inject drugs (including steroids or hormones)
